Two days ago Harvey Weinstein surrendered to the police after he was indicted on two counts of rape and one count of a criminal sex act. The allegations by over one hundred plus women broke the silence of sexual harassment, rape, and sexual misconduct in Hollywood, prompting the #MeToo movement.
Women in Hollywood who had kept silent all these years suddenly started to come forward with their own stories of Weinstein’s advances and warnings if they did not comply with his sexual demands. Gwenyth Paltrow, Ashely Judd, Rose McGowan are just a few of Hollywood’s actresses that have told their stories.
His arrest comes after allegations by two women, Lucia Evans, who says Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex in his office after he lured her into a meeting back in 2004. The other accuser who has not been publicly identified, alleges that Weinstein raped her in a Manhattan hotel back in 2013.
Weinstein’s lawyer said he has not had enough time to prepare the producer to testify before the grand jury, saying that his request to postpone before the grand jury had been denied. He also expressed that the woman who alleges the rape by Weinstein had a “10-year consensual sexual relationship” after the 2013 incident.
So the question remains will Harvey Weinstein face jail time for his actions? Experts think that he could take a plea bargain to avoid facing 25 years in a criminal case where other women’s testimony would be key contributors to his case. Could other women’s testimonies bring down the once famous Hollywood producer like they did in the Cosby case?
One thing is for sure, these women have opened up the dialog about what they face in Hollywood, and while we may not see an immediate change in how women are viewed, there definitely seems to be a conversation that is becoming more and more talked about and being brought to new light! If Weinstein is convicted, it would be a huge triumph for women everywhere, first Cosby, then Weinsten…next Trump?
