UFC 123 features the return of former UFC Light Heavyweight champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Lyoto “the Dragon” Machida in the main event. Former UFC champions BJ Penn and Matt Hughes also face off in a welterweight match.
Focus is in the light heavyweight matchup as both fighters are coming off losses and are trying to get back right on track in their quest for the title. Machida lost his light heavyweight title by knockout to Mauricio Rua in their rematch at UFC 113. Quinton Jackson suffered a unanimous decision loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 114 for the No. 1 UFC Light Heavyweight contender spot.
This is a huge fight for both Rampage and Machida. A loss will push one of these fighters farther away from a title shot.
As for Hughes and Penn, the two share a history dating back to 2004, when Penn, who had fought at 155 pounds his entire career, moved up to welterweight and beat Hughes for the title.
Hughes, a multiple-time world champion, had won six straight fights at 170 pounds before the loss to Penn. He went on to win six in a row after that, including a rematch with Penn in 2006.
With no title implications, tonight’s fight represents a chance for both men to prove they are the superior fighter. This is the TIEBREAKER!
