The handlers of the worlds most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, said that the furry little guy has seen his shadow and winter will continue for six more weeks. This is the case for everyone except those lucky enough to live in south Florida.
Records dating back to 1887 show that Phil has predicted a longer winter 103 times compared to an early spring 18 times.
Phil’s prediction is always done ahead of time by the group on Gobbler’s Knob, which is located just outside Punxsutawney.
The night before the big reveal a group of thousands gathered overnight awaiting for the forecast. This year star wars themed fireworks lit up the sky.
Punxsutawney had the following to say this year “It’s mighty cold weather, you’ve been braving. Is it more winter or is it spring that you’re craving? Since you’ve been up all night and starting to tottle, I, Punxsutawney Phil, shall not dawdle,” the proclamation read. “My faithful followers, I could clearly see a beautiful, perfect shadow of me. Six more weeks of winter, it shall be!”
Rumor has it that Punxsutawney Phil is 131 years old this year. He drinks a special elixir every summer that guarantees seven more years of life. The average lifespan of a groundhog is between 6 and 10 years. So what do you think? Is Punxsutawney Phil really 131 years old?
