Donovon Frankenreiter, pro surfer and singer, made a pit stop in Ft. Lauderdale this past July. He played two fantastic shows at the Culture Room located near Federal Highway and Oakland Park Blvd.
In addition to performing two successful sets, he made a cameo at Hang Loose Surf School: a local school affiliated with Billabong run by local surfer Dutch Schorn. The Dutch Master’s sole purpose? To teach the young ones to surf! In addition to running a surf school, Dutch is a manager and buyer at the local surf shop BC Surf and Sport — the biggest core surf shop on the East Coast that has been open for over 30 years.
Wearing a Zinka (colored sunscreen) mustache to look just like Donovan, the kids waited in anticipation for him to arrive.
At about 3 pm he showed up as planned, and he was escorted by the local Billabong/Von Zipper rep, Dimitri. Both of them were very impressed with the kids and their finely tuned mustaches, which paid a simple yet heartfelt hommage to one of their idols. Not only did Donovan show up, but he changed into his custom cut Billabong board shorts and surfed with the kids. The kids were flipping out with excitement. After a surf session, the man of the hour was impressed to see one of the kids had learned one of his songs on the ukulele. Donovan started singing to the music and even played a few cords himself. It was like a private show just for the kids.
