Ohhh face: Prejean

Ohhh face: Prejean

The Miss California USA Organization donated thirty seconds of free air time to the state’s largest gay rights group during its November 22nd telecast. The largesse was a round-about revisiting of last year’s row over then-Miss California Carrie Prejean’s remarks about gay marriage during the Miss Universe competition. The Miss California USA Organization had earlier revoked Prejean’s Miss California title, citing contract violations, including her failure to attend scheduled and mandatory appearances; that decision had been endorsed by the competition’s owner, Donald Trump. (In response to her termination, The Donald said, “I told Carrie she needed to get back to work and honor her contract… and I gave her the opportunity to do so.”) Miss California USA offered Equality California – an advocacy group which campaigns in support of legalizing gay marriage in the Golden State – thirty seconds of free air time during the live broadcast. It likewise offered thirty seconds to its former title-holder, Carrie Prejean. In a letter to Prejean, the organization’s openly-gay executive director, Keith Lewis, wrote: “Dear Carrie, You may have heard that MISS CALIFORNIA USA 2010 will be broadcast for the first time in more than fifteen years. Although you and I are involved in litigation, I feel that offering you the opportunity to pre-tape a brief message is in keeping with my desire all along to deal fairly in spite of the situation. Please let me know by Wednesday October 21, 2009 if you would like to do so and I will attempt to make suitable arrangements. Best regards, Keith Lewis.” Through her attorney, Prejean declined. This is the former beauty queen’s latest headline turn. It follows her November 10th appearance on CNN’s Larry King Live broadcast, when she wouldn’t answer questions from the host concerning her legal settlement with the pageant’s organizers – refusing to take calls from viewers and referring to King’s questions as “inappropriate.” Reports suggested that Prejean was coy because of the terms of the settlement – and because word had leaked of the existence of a video sex tape featuring Prejean. (And speaking of inappropriate, Prejean’s brother, Billy Arnone was quoted as saying, in reference to the sex tapes, “If they were put in front of me I’d probably watch them.”) – C.A.
