Red hot writer/director/producer Judd Apatow has teamed up with Paul Reubens to develop a new Pee-wee film for the big screen. Apatow is most known for directing and writing The 40 Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Funny People. He also wrote Pineapple Express, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Paul Reubens is most known for his Pee-Wee Herman character and the Pee-Wee’s Playhouse franchise. His most notable film was Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. This film was directed by then little known Tim Burton and helped launch his career.
Reubens’s career hit a major PR snag when in 1991 while in a Sarasota, Florida adult theater, Reubens was caught publicly masturbating. It seems police would make the rounds in these theaters just to catch guys doing this (great use of taxpayer money, BTW).
“Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman,” Apatow stated. “I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens—who is an extraordinary and groundbreaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.” The filmmaker says that he got the idea after taking in Reubens’s sold-out live show in LA earlier this year. “The Pee-wee Herman Show” is headed to Broadway in October.
Reubens is apparently just as honored to be working with Apatow. “There is no one like Judd in our business—he loves comedy with emotion and heart, and he sees what we do as art,” said the 57-year-old actor. “I can’t believe I’m getting this opportunity to be working with him.”
Reubens is working on the script with writer-actor Paul Rust. Apatow’s going to produce the film only, but that didn’t seem to hurt Superbad, Pineapple Express or Get Him to the Greek.prma
