New details have emerged regarding the road-rage shooting of former defensive end who played for the New Orleans Saints, Will Smith. Police believe that Smith and 28-year old Cardel Hayes got in a fight on the road and Hayes shot and killed Smith and wounded his wife, Racquel. Hayes was booked on a second-degree murder charge.
After further investigation police found that Hayes, a former high school football star in New Orleans area had worked security for the Saints while Smith played for the team, additionally Hayes had reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit against police in connection with the death of his father in 2005. According to police one of the officers named in the lawsuit was shown with Smith and former Saints running back Pierre Thomas shortly before the Smiths were shot. New Orleans police do not believe that there was any connection or reason for the shooting of Will Smith “anything other than an accident that turned into a dispute which turned violent.”
