The biggest soccer (football) tournament in the world is right around the corner. This is the Olympics of soccer. You get the best of the players, teams , and fans as the World Cup brings out heart, emotion and skill like no other sports event. This differs from the Olympics in that with the Olympics it is “watered down” as countries have many chances to medal in many different events. The old “We will get them next time.”
World Cup Soccer is for International “bragging rights” that people would and have died for! That being said, let’s jump into what the World Cup is all about.
The FIFA World Cup, is an international association soccer / football competition contested by the men’s national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not contested because of World War II.
The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month.
During the 18 tournaments that have been held, seven nations have won the title. Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. Italy, the current champions, have won four titles, and Germany are next with three titles. The other former champions are Uruguay, winners of the inaugural tournament, and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France, with one title each.
The World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world with an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany.
This year’s World Cup takes place in South Africa. The United States is in the middle of the pack as they are a 66:1 shot to win the World Cup 2010 at www.bodog.com.
June 12th the United States plays its very first game vs. England. This game is of monumental importance as both teams are fighting to get out of Group C. The very first game will be June 11th as hosting nation, South Africa takes on Mexico.
