A substance-abuse counselor from California who drunkenly hit a man with her car than drove two miles with his body on the hood of her car, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
Sherri Lynn Wilkins, was found guilty of hitting and killing Phillip Moreno, 31, back in 2012.
Wilkins who had been found guilty in 2014 was originally sentenced to 55 years in prison but an appellate court overturned her conviction. The fact that her entire criminal history had been admitted at the trial had potential to prejudice the jury, so the conviction was overturned.
Wilkins is a former heroin addict who had multiple felony convictions for burglary, which she committed to feed her drug addiction.
Wilkins pleaded no contest to the same charges, second-degree murder and two counts drunken driving, and was immediately handed her new sentence.
Wilkins drank three shots of vodka and one beer before getting behind the wheel. Her attorney argued that there had not been enough time for her blood alcohol level to exceed the legal limit at the time of the accident.
Wilkins blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when tested.
