Wagering on the 2016 college football season is now open in Las Vegas, as the South Point became the first sports book in town to post point spreads on games. The bet shop last week put up lines on 41 games on the Week 1 slate, as well as 40 “Games of the Year.”

Here are a few quick observations before we get to the full lists.

— The mad respect for the SEC will be in full force to start the season. In two of the marquee opening-week games, teams from the conference are double-digit favorites – and neither are home. LSU is -10 at Wisconsin (actually, the game is at Lambeau Field, which certainly means a home-field advantage for the Badgers), and Alabama is -10 vs. USC in a game to be held at the Cowboys’ stadium in Arlington, Tex.

— Notre Dame backers have to be running to the windows to bet the Irish in Week 1. They are a pick ‘em at Texas, a team they throttled 38-3 as 8.5-point favorites last season.

— Back to the SEC for a second…LSU is favored vs. Alabama for the first time since 2006. Alabama, in fact, has kicked off as the underdog only once since 2009, and that was last season as a 1-point pup at Georgia. The Tide took that personally and rolled, 38-10.

— Michigan shows up twice on the South Point’s Games of the Year board in year two of the Jim Harbaugh era. The Wolverines go on the road against their two biggest rivals. They are 2-point favorites in a huge revenge spot at Michigan State, and they are catching 6.5 points at Ohio State.

— Big things are expected from Oklahoma this season, based on the betting numbers. The Sooners are laying 9 points against Ohio State, two touchdowns vs. Texas and 12.5 home vs. Oklahoma State.

— Oregon’s run of dominance in the Pac-12 appears to be long gone, and the power in that conference is pretty evenly distributed. Look out for Washington, though, warns Chris Andrews, sports book director of the South Point. “I’m pretty high on Washington. That’s a good team,” Andrews told Covers.com. “I think Washington is kind of a sleeper team.” Andrews opened the Huskies as 4.5-point dogs at the Ducks.
