It’s like the Barrow Gang all over again in 2011. The FBI is in hot pursuit of three members of the Florida-based Dougherty family after the trio joined forces for a crime spree. It all started on Monday when a judge ordered brother Ryan Dougherty to wear a monitoring bracelet for two years and check in with a parole officer for ten after he was convicted of sending harmful information to a minor. What exactly that means is a mystery to me, but it requires he register as a sex offender in the state of Florida. Irate with the ruling, he sent his mother a text message shortly after the court appearance saying, “There’s a time for all of us to die.” Did these kids watch “Bonnie and Clyde” too many times? The following morning, Ryan, his sister Lee Grace and his half-brother Dylan Dougherty Stanley all piled into a stolen white 2006 Subaru Impreza and hit the road around 6:30 AM. Within an hour, the ankle bracelet had been cut off and the group was speeding down the highway at over one 100mph firing shots at a police officer who attempted to pull the siblings over for speeding. One of those bullets struck the cop’s tire, forcing the vehicle off the road. A little after noon, the fugitives entered a bank in Valdosta, Georgia, brandished assault weapons and made off with a substantial chunk of money. They finished off the robbery by firing their automatic weapons into the ceiling of the bank in true Barrow Gang fashion. None of the fugitives have been seen since. The FBI got involved as soon as they crossed state lines. It’s one thing to have shootouts with local law enforcement but the FBI doesn’t usually miss, so I can’t see this story having a very good ending for the Dougherty Gang.
