While the Green Bay Packers come into the NFL’s Week 7 Thursday nighter all kinds of banged up and off an uninspiring loss to Dallas, a home date against the woeful Bears may be just what they need.
But the betting line mved sharply in the Bears’ direction since opening numbers were posted Sunday night. The Packers were as high as 9.5-point favorites during early wagering, but aso more bad injury news surfaced in Green Bay, the point spread dipped to 7.5.
The total sits around 46, down from an opener of 47.
Running backs Eddie Lacy and James Starks are both expected to miss Thursday’s game, and the Packers have cobbled together a hodge-podge of players – new-acquisition Knile Davis, Don Jackson from the practice squad and wideout Ty Montgomery– in an effort to fill the void.
This may leave Green Bay’s offensive fate to the passing game. That’s usually not a bad thing, but Aaron Rodgers and company just haven’t been clicking like we’re used to seeing.
On the other hand, there’s not clicking, and then there’s the Bears.
Not only is Chicago not winning games, they’re not covering spreads – they’re 1-5 both SU and ATS this season. The Bears couldn’t even get it done as favorites at home against the Jaguars last week, falling 17-16 while laying 2.5 points. To be fair, they haven’t been getting blown out, either.
Don’t put the Bears’ poor record on QB Brian Hoyer’s shoulders, though. The veteran has been rock solid in place of Jay Cutler, putting up four straight 300-yard games, completing 68.8 percent of his passes and tossing six touchdowns and no picks. Thursday, he’ll test his efficiency against a secondary depleted by injuries.
Despite the Packers’ health issues and mediocrity, the sky isn’t quite falling in Green Bay. They are 3-2 SU (2-2-1 ATS) and Thursday get a team they’ve owned over the past several seasons – other than the most recent meeting that is. When they last met, the Bears won outright as 7.5-point dogs in Green Bay in November, 17-13. The Packers, though, won 10 of the 11 previous meetings and covered the spread in all 10 wins.
