This weeks competitors on America’s Got Talent have been outstanding, from the sweet little girl, Angelica Hale that could be the next Whitney Houston, to Nick Unas the charming chemist that captivated the audience with his love for science, but ultimately the one that stood out the most and that won this week’s golden buzzer by Simon was Mandy Harvey.
Harvey, 29, sang her own songs while playing an instrument and while you may not think that is so amazing, you learn that she is deaf. Mandy lost her hearing when she was 18 to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disease exacerbated by medications used during knee surgeries. Harvey had been singing since she was four but when she lost her hearing she left music and took American Sign Language classes and courses in Elementary Education at a local community college.
Once she returned home Mandy decided that she would take a year off of singing, but she did continue to play the guitar with her father. One day while searching the internet Mandy and her father discovered a song titled “Come Home” by OneRepublic. Mandy’s father suggested that she learn the lyrics so that they could make a home recording. Mandy thought this would be impossible, but she gave it her best effort. She was able to read the music and sing in key, which brought her to the realization that she didn’t have to give up on singing.
