2010: Sailing into New Waters

By : Grant Henderson

As we move into the New Year it is a great time to look back in review of 2009.  For obvious reasons things had slowed down from 2008 but the end seems to be on the horizon.  Since the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, business has started to come around again.  Although the overall traffic at the show seemed less than normal, the “quality” of traffic was above satisfactory.  Qualified prospects seemed to sense rock bottom and were looking to get back into the market sometime in 2010.  The show has led to a slight rise in sales and the outlook for 2010 looks very promising.

On a personal note, I have left 4Yacht, Inc. and am now with Ocean Alexander Yachts of Ft. Lauderdale. 4Yacht is a wonderful company and gave me my start in yacht brokerage; they truly are a world class organization.  However, I have had the urge to sell new boats for many years now and Ocean Alexander just opened a new office in Ft. Lauderdale on Las Olas Blvd and presented me with the opportunity to sell new boats, brokerage as well as trade.  They have a beautiful line and a rock solid reputation.  Although the decision was difficult, I accepted the decision and started with Ocean Alexander on December 1st.

Ocean Alexander was started in 1973 by Alex Chueh in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.  Since then they have built over 2,000 yachts and over 50 models.  In addition to the yard in Kaohsiung, they also have a yard in Shanghai, China.  Office locations include: Seattle, WA; Newport Beach, CA; Sturgeon Bay, WI; Newport, RI; Annapolis, MD; Stuart, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, FL; Puerto Rico and Panama.

Ocean Alexander has grown and excelled because of the skills of its managers, workers and artisans, many whom have been with the company for decades.  Ocean Alexander has relied on naval architect Ed Monk, Jr. since the beginning.  He has provided designs that are luxurious, efficient, spacious, solid and sea-worthy.  Ocean Alexander has sold boats throughout the world through a network of knowledgeable and loyal dealers.  Ocean Alexander’s biggest accomplishment has been its client retention rate.  Most customers who buy an Ocean Alexander will stay with Ocean Alexander should they choose to build bigger.  Their warranty program, fit and finish, joinery, and customer service is unmatched and keeps bringing clients back.

Every new Ocean Alexander built has the newest technology and systems as well as appliances.  Their hulls are built with carbon fiber infused composite with vacuum-bag technology.  With this method the customer can be confident his/her yacht is built to the utmost safety and engineering standards.  These are just a few of the many reasons they have been in business for over 30 and are continuing to build.

Ocean Alexander currently builds 50’-60’ Trawlers and from 62’-145’ ranging from raised pilothouses to tri-deck motoryachts.  In addition to building new yachts, Ocean Alexander has over 80 used/brokerage boats for sale.  Not to mention they have the ability to take in trades.  Their marketing and advertising campaign for their new and brokerage boats is very aggressive and you can be sure your vessel will get proper exposure. Ocean Alexander will have over 5 boats on display at the upcoming Stuart Boat show January 15th-17th as well as a very large display at the Miami International Boat Show February 11th-15th.

As we progress into the New Year, now is the time to list your boat if you are trying to sell.  2010 seems to be the year when things may bounce back in the yachting industry; buyer’s confidence is returning and hopefully the banks will follow.

If you ever have any questions or comments on Ocean Alexander of any other boat for that matter, feel free to call or email me anytime.  grant@oceanalexander.com (786) 390-2782.  Have fun and happy and safe boating!! Keep it between the channel markers!
