Monday night, thunderstorms passing through Darlington, South Carolina claimed the lives of two shelter dogs. Named Cora and Amelia, the animals were in kennels when lightning struck. The electricity traveled through the metal housings and electrocuted both of them.

Staffers at the DCHS Rescue have set up a YouCaring crowd funding campaign to help make improvements to the facility and prevent future tragic losses. The appeal for donations reads, in part, “We are here today to make sure they are not forgotten and other pets at the shelter now and in the future are safe and not the victim of old wiring and an old shelter design.” A goal of $125,000 has been set, and money given will be used to build a new intake area and a dog run.
