Johnny Depp’s wife Amber Heard was charged for bringing their two pet dogs into Australia without declaring them in May 2015. As a result, this had sparked reactions ranging from extreme disdain to poking fun. The deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce had publicly threatened to press charges against Heard and euthanize the dogs. While others found humour in the whole situation and created internet memes such as #thewaronterrier.
Depp and Heard recently released a bizarre and maybe purposefully unnatural apology video which was said to be part of the plea deal. In the video Depp and Heard is seen talking seriously about Australia as a ‘wonderful island’ and acknowledging the importance of keeping it protected and “…free of many pests and diseases that are commonplace around the world” crediting it for having such strict laws around bio-security. Joyce did not seem impressed by the apology video and commented that: “I don’t think it would be something they would have willingly wanted to do.”
Heard eventually pleaded guilty for ‘falsifying immigrant document’, but the serious charges against illegally importing her two dogs were dropped.
