Researcher in Hungary have found evidence to support the long standing claim that Dogs actually do understand what we say to them. In order to find this evidence, scientists scanned the brains of dogs as they were listening to their trainer speaking to determine which parts of the brain they were using. They found that dogs are using the same phenomenon as humans to understand the words. They use left hemisphere of the brain to process the words and right hemisphere to understand the pitch.
A lead researcher and neuroscientist Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest said, “Dog brains care about both what we say and how we say it. Praise can work as a reward only if both word meaning and intonation match.” He added, “The findings suggest that the mental ability to process language evolved earlier than previously believed and that what sets humans apart from other species is the invention of words.”
