Cardell Hayes Says He Acted In Self-Defense In The Shooting & Killing Of Former Saints Player Will Smith!

Police are trying to determine how a fender-bender ended up with a former New Orleans Saint shot to death. Suspect Cardell Hayes has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of Will Smith.

Cardell Hayes named former New Orleans police Capt. Billy Ceravolo as one of the officers who fatally shot his father.

The same officer Cervolo told The Advocate he met with Smith and former Saints running back Pierre Thomas for dinner in the Lower Garden District shortly before the argument and subsequent shooting that claimed Smith’s life.

“Ceravolo, who called Smith and Thomas personal friends, said he was not at the scene of the shooting and was not aware that Hayes had named him in his federal lawsuit,” The Advocate reported.

Hayes said he opened fire in self-defense because he feared Smith was reaching for a weapon, his attorney John Fuller said. Hayes also said he was involved in a hit-and-run crash minutes before the incident, and was trying to “pursue the vehicle in an effort to get the license plate number,” Fuller said.
